So I watched Justin Bieber's movie Never Say Never, and I gotta say, I thought it was quite impressive. He went from 0 to at least 120 in a year and a half. He used youtube.com as his platform and uploaded videos of him singing covers of songs, and then this music guy found him and told Usher about it and Justin flew over there and got signed. Then he sold out Madison Square Garden in 22 minutes. That's pretty awesome.
But you know, when people get signed by the music industry, then the industry eventually tells them exactly what and what not to do. So you may enter the industry knowing who you are and what you stand for, but for the purpose of fame and image, the industry will change you a little bit so you fit the profile for who they want you to be on stage, in the news, and all around social media. Millions of dollars will be invested into promotion and marketing.
They'll give you a contract that basically states: "You get all the fame, and we get all the money. We'll do this for about ten years. Sign below."
Of course, you'll get a little bit of money as well, but the industry will take 95% of all CD sales.
Fame seems to be the thing that almost all artists want. Lots of it, too. They want to be trending on Twitter, they want millions of fans to like their Facebook fan page, they want millions of views and subscribers on Youtube, and they want to be on all kinds of shows, newspapers, magazines, and what not. They want people to know their name, and if possible, like their stuff as well.
But why fame? Well, because it's all about the artist, isn't it? It's a narcissistic thing, essentially. "I'm freaking awesome and I want people to know it."
So what about a band with musicians whose names nobody knew, but everybody loved the music they played? Is it possible to make music famous without making the artist famous as well? You know, for all those artists who don't care about fame, who only care about their music and lyrics and how people react to it. Because right now, it's all about the artist's face, not their lyrics. Justin Bieber's lyrics suck, but his portrayed personality and his looks are popular, especially among the young teenage girls of the west. It's not about the music anymore. It's about the musician. But I think it's supposed to be the other way around, especially since almost all of the lyrics you hear today are about the same topics: get high, get wasted, get laid, and have fun. That's not very creative, you know?
So yeah, leave those valuable thoughts of yours in that little rectangle below and let me know what you think about anything I mentioned, or even things I didn't mention. Cheers.
