Maria, the last song on Justin Bieber's new album, Believe, out Tuesday, starts with audio of Bieber being asked by Today host Matt Lauer whether he "knows this woman." That's a reference to Mariah Yeater, who claimed last year that she was pregnant with the singer's child. (Yeater dropped the paternity suit in November.)
Bieber answers, "Never met the woman," then starts singing, "She says she met me on the tour, she keeps knocking on my door … She won't leave me alone."
All of which sounds a lot like Michael Jackson's rebuttal to his various accusers in Billie Jean, his hit off 1982's Thriller. "She says I am the one, but the kid is not my son," Jackson sings.
"We were definitely looking to Billie Jean when we made this song," says Bieber. "It's our way of remembering an icon, and making a point."
Bieber won't go deeper on the topic, but it's clear that his mushrooming success is strengthening his desire to keep things in perspective. Although he just bought a multimillion dollar house in the Los Angeles suburbs, his heart resides elsewhere.
"L.A. is a different place, and I though I have friends there and feel comfortable, I won't live there forever," says Bieber, who was raised a hockey-playing towhead in Stratford, Ontario. "Home will always be Canada. I'll raise my kids there."
