Ted

By Chris Bollini

Rating: 3/4

For those not familiar with the name, Seth MacFarlane, he's the creative force behind the hit animated television show, "The Family Guy". Now, he gets a chance to write, direct and star in his first film, "Ted"

The story begins as the sweet story of John Bennett, a lonely child with no friends. In fact, his one true companion is Ted, an oversized, stuffed teddy bear.  One magic Christmas morning, John wishes that his teddy would come to life, and when his wish comes true, the two swear to be friends forever.  When the story flashes forward 27 years, "Ted" takes a hilarious and raunchy turn. Now, a 35 year old man,  John (Mark Wahlberg) spends most of his time with Ted (voiced by MacFarlane) smoking pot and watching classic 80′s movies on television.  As his romantic relationship with longtime girlfriend, Lori (Mila Kunis) gets more serious, John finds that he may have to grow up and let go of his childhood friend.

Most people may criticize the film for its simple, silly storyline or the over the top, boundary pushing humor, but these qualities are part of the film's charm. Ted isn't perfect; the story drags at times, some jokes miss the mark, but there is no denying that this film is a laugh out loud good time.  There are plenty of funny moments, wonderful cameos from Giovanni Ribisi and Ryan Reynolds, and most exciting of all, MacFarlane's clever and quirky way of referencing pop culture, past and present.  He pays homage to films like "Airplane, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom", and the camp classic, "Flash Gordon". He pokes fun at modern day celebrities like Justin Bieber. These moments make the film stand out.  You won't want to bring young children and grandparents may be better off at home, but "Ted" is a witty, very funny film that seems destined to be an instant comedy classic.
