Christmas ‘Gangnam Style’ in Shanghai Updated: 19:37, Wednesday December 26, 2012

China appears to be the latest country to be hit by the global pop culture phenomenon – Gangnam Style.

Korean rapper Psy has not only taken over China’s music scene but has managed to make his mark on Christmas celebrations in the country as well.

On Monday, Christmas Eve, hundreds of people gathered in Shanghai’s Happy Valley to take part in a dance-off extravaganza.

Starting at 8.30pm local time people, young and old, strutted their stuff on the dance floor, singing and dancing the iconic ‘invisible horse-riding dance’.

‘We are all very enthusiastic. It ignites our passion in winter. We all feel very happy,’ Guo Cheng, a participant in the dance-off, told Reuters.

Since the song’s debut in August, Psy’s Gangnam Style has become a music sensation across the globe and was awarded the New Media Award at the American Music Awards in November.

Gangnam Style also made YouTube history this month by hitting 1 billion views on the internet broadcast site, surpassing Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ video.
