Carly Rae Jepsen said she "had a blast" the last time she came through Nashville roughly one year ago. The 26-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter met with radio stations to spread the word about her new single, got to see the town and "even snuck in a little bit of shopping, which is rare.”

Free time has become even rarer for Jepsen since then, as that single she was promoting was "Call Me Maybe," which went on to be one of the biggest hits of 2012, spending nine weeks at No. 1 and selling over six million digital downloads. On Friday, she returns to Nashville as the opening act on Justin Bieber's sold-out "Believe" tour, which has had her performing on arena stages since September and will take her to Europe in the coming months.

“It’s going the longest tour I’ve ever been involved in," she says. "You kind of feel like you’ve all joined the circus together."

Along with the circus, YouTube has provided a constantly entertaining sideshow over the last year, with fans and famous folks putting their own spin on "Maybe" with viral videos. The USA Olympic Swim Team made their own music video during their travels, , and Jepsen herself made a new version with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots playing the tune on toy instruments. She says friends and family kept her in the loop on the newest "Maybe" tributes.

“My mom was really cute about sending me the latest and greatest, like every day, and my friends were the same way. They were all so excited, because they’d seen me working at this my whole life."

While "Maybe" took on a life of its own, Jepsen quickly ensured she wouldn't be a one hit wonder. Her duet with Owl City, "Good Time," quickly raced up the charts, and the video for her latest single, "This Kiss," has more than 13 million views. But it's her first big hit - which she saves for last during her performances - that's still striking a chord with the crowd.

"It’s kind of the song that I never sing by myself," she says. "It’s the song that we all sing together. Half of the time, the microphone is pointed towards (the audience), and I just let them take it away."

Jepsen opens for Justin Bieber on Fri., January 18 at Bridgestone Arena (501 Broadway, 770-2000). The show is sold out.
