Paparazzo Killed Attempting to Photograph Justin Bieber | Iron Bridge

A paparazzo was struck and killed by a motorist while trying to get photos of Justin Bieber being stopped by police. Bieber was not present at the time.

Justin Bieber and other celebrities are calling for tougher laws against celebrity-chasing paparazzi after one was killed trying to get photos of what he believed to be a traffic stop involving Bieber. As it turns out, Bieber’s white Ferrari was pulled over, but the Biebs wasn’t in it. He had lent the vehicle to a friend who was pulled over for speeding by California police. The photographer was struck by another motorist after trying to get pictures of the traffic stop on a busy highway.

Through his record label, Bieber issued a statement about the incident: “Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves.”

As it stands, there are few laws limiting the actions of paparazzi as they chase celebrities in the hopes of getting that one gratuitous pic that could be worth thousands from the tabloids. Despite attempts at legislation to protect celebrities and their pursuers, judges have ruled that such laws would be in violation of first amendment rights protecting the freedom of speech and the press.

No charges are expected to be filed against the motorist who struck the Bieber paparazzo. Police indicated that a driver would never expect a pedestrian to be in that area of the freeway and that it was unlikely that the driver saw the photog before striking him with her vehicle. One prominent member of the paparazzi acknowledged the need for common sense in the pursuit of celebrities. “Everybody wants to be the first one to get that shot, get that scoop. But at the end of the day, you can’t spend money if you are dead.”
