K-pop sensation Psy has galloped into history, with his viral hit ‘Gangham Style’ being the first to pass two billion views on YouTube.
Since it was uploaded, in July 2012, the music video has amassed views equivalent to one-third of the global population. According to Rolling Stone, that’s 504 billion seconds (or 15,971.1 years) of watching the straight-faced 36-year-old gallop across our screens.
Psy – also known as Park Jaesang – took to Twitter to issue thanks for his music video milestone, in some rather broken, yet adorable, English.
“2 billion views; they are very honorable and very burdensome numbers,” wrote Psy. “With the appreciation, I will come back soon with more joyful contents!!”
‘Gangham Style’ became the most viewed video in the world last year when it broke the one billion mark on YouTube, usurping the one and only Justin Bieber, for his 2010 single ‘Baby’.
For those who haven’t seen the music video, well, we suggest you crawl out from under that rock you’ve been hiding and check it out. Featuring the adorable Psy, galloping alongside a miscellaneous crew of excitable dancers, a few horses and some pyrotechnics, it’s no wonder the viral video spent 31 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
YouTube offered kudos to Psy, by posting a warm message on their Google+ page. It read: “The most-viewed video on YouTube just hit another jaw-dropping milestone. Congrats on your 2 billionth view, PSY!”
The South Korean singer’s follow-up single, ‘Gentleman’, achieved another YouTube record when it hit 28 million views in the first 24 hours of being unleashed unto the site. With 691 million views, it currently sits on seventh place on the list of the all-time most viewed clips.
In light of his success, Psy visited Australian shores last year to perform as part of the Future Music Festival lineup. After performing multiple versions of ‘Gangham Style’, along with similar-sounding tracks, it was starting to look like the singer may just be another cliché one-hit wonder. However, judging by the success of ‘Gentleman’, perhaps the K-pop star has more infectious beats up his sleeve.
