With everything that happens in the music world on a weekly basis, you couldn’t possibly be expected to keep up with it all. But don’t worry, with the Reverb Week in Playlist we’ll keep our ears to the ground for the important music news and releases of the week and compile it into the most digestible form we know: a playlist.
As the summer solstice approaches and the first half of the year comes to a close, bands start dropping singles like there is no tomorrow. Really, the biggest thing that has happened in music news this week is that Youtube is fighting with indie labels and you’ll never be able to watch that Radiohead video of Thom Yorke dancing all weird ever again, so we are just focusing on new releases this week. Seriously, it seems like every band that has ever existed dropped a new track this weeks o hopefully here are some that you missed while you were listening to all the other new songs that were released.
Alt- J releases new music … featuring Miley Cyrus??
Last week we were pretty stoked to announce that Alt-J were finally releasing their second album this fall. Then, without any warning whatsoever (as alt bands are won’t to do) they dropped the first single from the album “Hunger of the Pine” which features a Miley Cyrus sample. Yes, you did read that right. At first we were more than skeptical, but after a few spins the track is seriously growing on us. Alt-J didn’t gain their popularity for sounding like everyone else, so we expected this track to be a little different. If this is any indication, the album itself should be pretty strong. Just as long as there aren’t any sneaky Justin bieber samples.
Wildcat! Wildcat! announces a new album
If you saw Alt-J headline the Bluebird in Denver last April, then you saw Wildcat! Wildcat! open for them and now, a little over a year later, the Los Angeles three-piece has announced that their next release “No Moon at All” will be coming out on Aug. 5 via Downtown Records. The first single “Hero”, which premiered on Tuesday, has the infectiously ethereal sound that Wildcat! Wildcat! is making their name with. This song will be perfect for July when the air is hazy and the heat doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. If this track had been released a little sooner, it probably would have made the Reverb staff list for best tracks of 2014 so far.
Ed Sheeran’s emotional new track about Alzheimers
Every time Ed Sheeran releases anything (or let’s be real, even breathes) there is a sigh that is heard around the world. People race to social media to compose “<3 Ed" tweets and tumblr posts. His latest release was received no differently, however there were many more tears accompanying this one. "Afire Love" is a slower track about Sheeran's grandfather and his battle with Alzheimers. The track is a bit more produced than his previous releases, but Sheeran's strong vocals and signature guitar come through making the song unmistakable.
The Courteeners craft a seamless pop track
Let’s all rework our “Songs of the Summer” list to include The Courteener’s latest as number 1. For one thing, the song is actually called “Summer” and for another thing, these Manchester indie lads have managed to create another perfect pop song. It is hard to believe that it has been six years since they solemnly crooned the reminder that ” [you're] Not Nineteen Forever” and that you should probably “pull yourself together.” This bass-driven breezy song is pop-rock perfection, and the band themselves is Morrissey approved. Their fourth album is dropping August 15th, just before the band headlines Reading and Leeds fest.
Air Dubai’s huge summer continues
Denver boys Air Dubai are living the teenage dream and spending their summer at the Warped Tour and to make the tour’s kick-off that much more exciting, the released a new track “Afterglow” featuring some vocals from Dia Frampton. “Be Calm” the new full length from Air Dubai will be released right in the throws of Warped Tour on July 1st. You can catch the hometown boys on the very last day of Warped Tour on August 3rd in the parking lot at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
