A paparazzo was hit and killed by a car in Los Angeles on New Years Day while attempting to take photos of Justin Bieber‘s Ferrari.
The singer’s white Ferrari was pulled over by California Highway Patrol for speeding, according to TMZ, where the photographer stepped out of his own car to take photos of the situation.
Justin wasn’t in the car, but it was reportedly driven by his friend, rapper Lil Twist.
The photog, who had been following Bieber’s Ferrari prior to the pull over, was later struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle as he was crossing the street to snap pics.
Justin released a statement about the accident overnight, expressing his condolences, he said, “While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim.”
He added, “Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves.”
Bieber has previously advocated for protection after recklessly being pursued by photographers while driving on several occasions.
A so-called “anti-paparazzi” law signed into California law by then-governor Arnold Schwarzengger in 2010 was declared unconstitutional last November, and is currently under appeal.
