As everyone who was watching the VMAs this past Sunday (or instead, just waited for clips from the show to end up online) knows, Justin Bieber broke down and cried immediately following his performance of “What Do You Mean?” However, it’s been unclear until now exactly why the Biebs did what he did.
Was he just trying to get attention? Was there something we all didn’t know about going on behind-the-scenes? Turns out, as the pop singer told Jimmy Fallon last night on The Tonight Show, Bieber was apparently taken aback by the reaction to his performance and all the love and support he received from the crowd.
“It was just so overwhelming for me,” Bieber said. “I missed some cues so I was a little disappointed at that … I wasn’t expecting them to support me in the way they did. Last time…I was at an award show, I was booed.”
However, Bieber acknowledged that, in the past, he’s had his faults, and that he’s trying to become better, not just musically, but in his everyday life as well.
“I’ve worked so hard at this album, I’ve worked so hard at at just becoming the man I want to become and then, like, stepping into situations you just can’t help but feel judged,” Bieber said. “Wanting to do what I love so badly, I just put everything out on the line…what was so special about the emotional moment at the end there is that it was authentic.”
